TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

The art classroom is a learning environment that can be multipurpose. Its a place for students to discover and step into a verifiable career. Next, the art room can develop life skills such as problem solving and collaboration. Lastly, as an art educator I am there to meet the student at their level and to build it from there.

My classroom teaching tends to be process oriented versus product. I feel strongly that the process helps build understanding and confidence within the artist.

TEACHING METHODS

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

Mutual Respect: Respect for the learning environment and respect for each other.

Good Vibes: My responsibility is to set the tone for the room. Students are relaxed and engaged.

Productivity: Students are expected to be productive, collaborate freely and ask plenty of questions.

ASSESSMENTS

Formative/Summative Questions and discussions are used to reflect on the content. Students practice and skill build in sketchbooks which are collected and graded weekly.

Feedback: Peer to peer feedback is utilized to build community and confidence.

DOK/Standard-Based: Using a variety of evaluations is important because students vary in the way they respond to assessments and instruction.

MANAGEMENT PLAN

Classroom Expectations: Setting behavioral expectations is key so students are aware of the boundaries.

Progressive Discipline: A system in place to allow for students to make choices and be accountable.

Parent Communication: I feel that keeping the parents aware of what’s going on with their child is paramount.

The number one problem in classrooms is not discipline; it is the lack of procedures and routines.
